I change my mind. this is a horrific book and is incredibly difficult to learn from. What Robert Norton struggles to explain in three windy paragraphs written in high-functioning gibberish can be explained simply in a youtube video in five seconds.Incompetent writer and teacher, has no place writing a texbook. Should have stuck to his job at Polaroid and not ripped off poor students trying to learn. It would have saved me many restless nights of struggling through homework on my own trying to decode his own style of English.
This book has a TON of information in it, but VERY few actual examples of how to use the material. Its just a "monument to me" kind of book where the author is showing how much he knows without actually using the book to instruct. Also, he uses retarded methods of measurement throughout the book. If you aren't intimately familiar with blobs and slugs, you're outta luck. Exceptional few examples using SI or normal lbf-ft measurements. Mostly blobs. The big problem is that since there is so much information, everything about the book is limited. Here are 2 pages on Shaking Moments and Balancing. These are IMPORTANT in mechanical engineering! Spend more time discussing and showing examples! Even the examples are nothing more than a quick write up, "so do this, do that and youre done". Except no calculations, no explanation of the why, nothing of use. And the Linkages program is good but hard to use because its so finicky about every little thing. There are bugs all in it, everytime I input the same data I get different answers back from it. And you have to do "Troubleshoot Compatibility" for anything outside of Windows 7.This dude is super smart, obviously, but he gave up on teaching a long time ago. This is nothing more than a book to try and impress everyone with his knowledge, but not actually do anything about instructing a student user. Sad...
This is probably the worst textbook I've had to read. Examples are scarce and confusing. The methods of naming linkages make things more complicated. Equations are scattered. Text doesn't explain the material at all. A lot of examples and problems in the book tell you to refer to the problem that they did 200 pages ago to get certain values you need so you have to do a lot of flipping through the pages. Overall a horrific book. I hope nobody has to buy this book ever again.
I have had several books from this author. He is terrible, the examples in this book are few and far between. And when there is an example it doesn't provide much if any work to show how he got his answer. If your professor requires this book I would definetly want to make sure that he or she is a competent teacher. In cases where the professor is bad at teaching this book will be of no help. I would definitely recommend finding a better source for the information in this book to supplement your education.
the example problems are all in the last page in the chapters, and asked us to refers to example problem/figures in the middle of the chapter, andwe have to flip back and forth to look at it..Then the example problem were also all over the place..
Poorly edited text book.
This textbook is quite hard to understand and follow at times.
I am currently a senior working toward me ME degree. This is the worst book that I have had to use. The author references diagrams from chapter 1 when you are in chapter 7, so you are constantly flipping pages back and forth. Not that big of a deal, right? That is what I thought until I actually had to do it. It stinks. There are typos EVERYWHERE in this book. Not to mention that almost 1/4 of the diagrams have at least one mislabeled "element", whether it be a position vector or an incorrectly marked "Omega". Having "omega 2" located on 3 different points of a link system is not correct. They should have been labeled "omega 2", "omega 3"....... I know that the author has been writing text books for over 20 years. It is sad when an engineering student that is trying to grasp kinematic concepts is constantly finding inconsistency in the book.
